My Story

Peace.  Beauty.  Light.
Three aspects that Rebecca Zook consciously incorporates into her paintings. As a native Texan, she grew up with an appreciation of the unique beauty that Texas offers. Wandering the trails, playing in the creek near her childhood home and befriending every creature she encountered, Rebecca found a true love in nature. This connection is something that’s remained a part of her throughout her life and this love of the landscape and its inhabitants is expressed through each brushstroke.

“If you stop and watch the sky for any length of time, you realize how quickly it transforms itself. Clouds spring to life, change shape and dissipate right before your eyes. Sunrises and sunsets are the most dramatic. Almost second by second the colors grow and fade. My paintings capture one brief moment of that perpetually changing beauty.”

“Earth and Sky”, how Rebecca refers to the entirety of her skyscapes and landscapes. It is an ongoing body of work that is a true labor of love for the artist. It focuses almost exclusively on the Texas landscape from the ground skyward. Swaying grasses of the endless prairie and the vast skies with their ever changing cloud formations evoke a unique beauty that defines the gateway to the American West. The Earth and Sky series features acrylic paintings in a representational style with hints of impressionism.

“I’m drawn to Texas’ plentiful native grasses in particular. Watching the wind weave patterns through them and the gentle swaying provide me with a much needed calm. I stand among them and am reminded of the ocean. Great waves roll across the fields. Seed heads catch the sun and glow like breaking spray.”

She has had multiple solo shows featuring “Earth and Sky” pieces and was chosen by the Near Southside, Inc non-profit organization to create a 15-1/2 ft by 5 ft sunrise mural on Magnolia Avenue near downtown Ft. Worth. It was completed in October 2018. Multiple paintings were purchased and now hang in Tarleton State University’s Ft. Worth campus on Chisholm Trail Parkway that opened in 2019. Rebeca was also chosen to create an 8-panel installation for TRINITY METRO TEXRAIL’s Smithfield Depot in North Richland Hills. These pieces combine visual art and written text to tell the story of the city from its founding to modern day. All researched and written by Rebecca. It was unveiled in February 2022.

Rebecca paints primarily on panels she prepares herself and uses an acrylic technique involving many overlapping layers of thin washes of color, finding this better conducive to capturing the unique qualities of light. Expressing herself in written word is an important part of her artistic process. Each piece is accompanied by her thoughts. Sometimes a poem or sometimes a description of the internal emotions she drew from when painting the piece. Her art is about beauty and it serves as a counterbalance to life’s struggles. For Rebecca, her art has helped her deal with the death of her first husband, breast cancer and rare chronic health conditions. She hopes that others find comfort in her paintings and words.

“Nature’s sublime beauty. It causes us to pause, to marvel and to forget, for that moment at least, the harshness and pain that can walk with us. This beauty always surrounds us. We are sometimes blind to it, but it is always there. Waiting to be rediscovered and lead us out of the shadows and into the light of a new dawn.”

Rebecca is represented by The Dutch Art Gallery in Dallas and Your Private Collection Gallery in Granbury, Texas. To get to know Rebecca better, follow her on Personal Facebook, Business Facebook or Instagram where she posts in progress photos of her work. She is also known for wildlife paintings and pet portraits and accepts commissioned work of most subject matter.

More About the Artist

Rebecca is a true creative excelling in many forms of expression. She illustrated the children’s book, “A Zebra Tale”, for the Immune Deficiency Foundation.
